Message from the New Superior

Jul 22, 2020

I hope you are bearing well with the circumstances of life as we pass through such very troubled times. It seems as though here in Dallas we are almost at the epicenter of the pandemic, though Houston is a hot spot as well.

My name is Father John Magdalene Suenram, OCD. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself as the new Superior of Mount Carmel Center with its three other friars in residence. Some of you may already know me as I was Superior and Director of the Center here in Dallas during the years of 2000 through 2002.

I am from a family of 9 kids and I was the oldest boy. I grew up in central Kansas where, through the influence of my Father, I developed a deep love of nature. I got a degree in Sociology from Wichita State and worked in the area of juvenile corrections for some four and one-half years before I entered the Order at our Novitiate in Arkansas in 1979. I am 69 now, and I have been assigned at one time or another at each of the friaries in the Province. My last assignment was a six-year stint at our friary in Oklahoma City where I was one of the guys on a team of parish ministers.

Of course, I wouldn't be in the Order unless I had a deep love for Carmelite spirituality and for the fraternity of Carmel. Some of you may have taken in conferences I have given here at Mt. Carmel in the past. Others of you, who are Carmelite Seculars may have received my care as a spiritual assistant at one time.

In other times, we would have had some sort of 'getting to know you' or 'welcoming ceremony' but there is no chance if that happening now, at least at any time soon. So, I want to express that I am very happy to be back here and I really want to thank all of you for your friendship with Mount Carmel Center and for your support of the Center through volunteer activity or through your financial help. May God be with you.

In Christ,

Fr. John Magdalene Suenram, OCD
